NYC’s Post-Sandy Status: School Out, Carpools In

NEW YORK, NY - OCTOBER 30: A truck drives through a flooded street, caused by Hurricane Sandy, on October 30, 2012, in the Lower East Side of New York City. The storm has claimed at least 16 lives in the United States, and has caused massive flooding accross much of the Atlantic seaboard. US President Barack Obama has declared the situation a 'major disaster' for large areas of the US East Coast including New York City. (Photo by Andrew Burton/Getty Images)

During his afternoon update, Mayor Bloomberg announced that New York City schools will remain closed for the remainder of the week, sending a shudder through the already frazzled community of local parents. (For better or worse, Halloween candy stashes will probably be low as well.)

Bloomberg also declared that any car entering Manhattan via bridge or tunnel must be carrying at least three passengers from 6 a.m. to midnight, with the exception of the George Washington Bridge, in hopes of easing the traffic situation. As for athletic events, the Nets season opener against the Knicks at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center is off, while Sunday’s New York Marathon is a go. Asked if the city will be back to normal by Monday, Bloomberg replied, “Do you believe in crossing your fingers? I hope so.”
