The latest turn in the search for the killer of New York Red Bulls youth soccer coach Michael Jones is a frustrating one: Law enforcement sources say they have a suspect, but he’s already fled the country to Mexico. The Associated Press reported the suspect’s name as “Orlando Orea, also known as Orlando Gutierrez or Orlando Estevas,” but police haven’t released that identity officially. Two news outlets are reporting that he fled to Mexico, but have slightly different accounts of when he left. The AP says Orea bought his ticket on a one-way Aero Mexico flight just before it left on Tuesday morning. The New York Post, which hasn’t named the suspect (but notes he’s from Queens), reports: “Police identified the fiend this afternoon and put him on a no-fly list, but it was too late — he flew out of the country last night.” Whenever he left, both accounts suggest police just missed him.
