Lower Manhattan Is Down to One Hospital

Every other hospital in the area has been evacuated, but thanks to nine generators, plus four more provided by FEMA on Thursday night, Beth Israel Medical Center is still open. The hospital is at 96 percent capacity and there were 500 people in the ER yesterday, up from the usual 300. Meanwhile, Mount Sinai Hospital on the Upper East Side has taken in 99 patients from Lower Manhattan hospitals. “Unfortunately, New York City hospitals have a lot of experience dealing with extraordinary events,” says Mount Sinai Hospital COO Wayne Keathley.
