Marco Rubio Insists He Likes Pitbull Just Fine

Florida senator and early 2016 presidential campaigner Marco Rubio’s prevaricating answer about the age of the earth might be the detail from his Monday GQ interview that grabbed the most headlines, but it’s not the thing Rubio’s most worried about clarifying. The only part of the interview he felt moved to address via Twitter on Monday was the suggestion that he was anything other than stoked on Miami rapper Pitbull.

In the interview, Rubio painted Pitbull as a sellout compared to his own rap heroes like Tupac Shakur and Eminem. He told GQ’s Michael Hainey: “There’s no message for him, compared to like an Eminem,” and, “I mean, he’s not Tupac. He’s not gonna be writing poetry.” Then, after the interview came out, Rubio apparently realized he had just thrown shade at a native son of Florida (one with 7 million Twitter followers to Rubio’s 206,500, for what that’s worth, though @Pitbull stayed mum on the topic). So he backtracked:

He went on to tweet that “@Pitbull makes party music not message music. Always been place for that in #HipHop. As he gets older he will have more 2 say about life.” But that second tweet has since been deleted. Seems Rubio has finally worked out his stance on the all-important Pitbull issue. Phew.
