Why in the world, we wondered, are private companies, neighborhood groups, and the parks department fighting over the scrap wood from the storm-damaged Rockaway Beach Boardwalk? Is it really that valuable? As it turns out, yes it is: “On Tuesday, Alan Solomon, the owner of Sawkill Lumber, which has recycled wood from boardwalks before, surveyed portions of the damaged Rockaway Boardwalk. He estimated that a blocklong segment — about 23,000 square feet — could be worth $250,000,” the New York Times reports. Who knew?
