Magical Zebra and Pony Running Free on Staten Island [Updated]

The majestic grace of the runaway pony and zebra pair captured clopping through a Staten Island parking lot this morning is jarring in this bizarre context, but also beautiful. The equines, which we’re choosing to imagine as star-crossed lover outlaws because we need something to cling to on this Wednesday, narrowly avoided being hit by a car, the Staten Island Advance reports, before continuing on their journey. Unfortunately, we know how this one ends: “About 30 seconds later,” said a witness, “I saw two men in dark black suits carrying lassoes running across the street.” Pray our hooved heroes find solace in a green meadow somewhere, however slight their chances.

Update: The New York Times has details on the duo’s inevitable — and thankfully safe — return to captivity: “by 2:30 p.m., the police reported that the pair – the unstriped animal was actually a horse, the police said – had been captured and returned to their home, a petting zoo up the road at Victory Boulevard and Travis Avenue.” We’ll be waiting for the sequel.
