The local papers are just piling on the sadness this morning, with two stories on individuals affected by Hurricane Sandy for whom things only got worse. In the New York Times, the terrible fate of displaced New Jersey man Thomas Lewis is described in gut-wrenching detail: Lewis was struck and killed by two cars near the highway motel that was serving as his temporary home. “‘We hadn’t been anywhere since the hurricane,’ said his girlfriend, describing their attempted outing to a bowling alley down the road. She had paused to tighten her scarf — ‘Then I see him get hit.’”
From the New York Post comes another horrible coincidence of circumstance, in which Staten Island’s Eddie Saman lost all of his possessions two times in less than a month. The storm wiped out his home, along with his heat and electricity, before the woodburning oven he was using for warmth set fire to the donations he was living on. “Maybe God doesn’t want me to be here,” said Saman. “It’s very overwhelming.”
And all of a sudden, we have absolutely nothing to complain about.
