Though a survey conducted shortly after the Newtown shooting suggested that more than 6 out of 10 Americans support banning assault weapons, a new USA Today/Gallup poll finds Americans are actually more divided on the issue. According to the new poll, support for stricter gun control measures has jumped to 58 percent following the school shooting, up from 43 percent in October 2011; banning assault weapons just isn’t what people have in mind. The numbers are virtually unchanged from last year, with 43 percent supporting the ban and 51 percent against it. Dan Gross, president of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, said the new poll is just “an example of where the gun lobby’s narrative has taken root and needs to be overcome.”
