It Took the NRA Four Days to Come Up With ‘Shocked, Saddened, and Heartbroken’

After a closely watched silence on the shooting in Newtown, Connecticut, the National Rifle Association spoke up today in a brief statement. “The National Rifle Association of America is made up of four million moms and dads, sons and daughters — and we were shocked, saddened and heartbroken by the news of the horrific and senseless murders in Newtown,” it reads. “Out of respect for the families, and as a matter of common decency, we have given time for mourning, prayer and a full investigation of the facts before commenting.” Now that the anti-gun voices have had a head-start, the group teased that it is “prepared to offer meaningful contributions to help make sure this never happens again,” and plans to say more at a “major” news conference near Washington, D.C., on Friday. That should be something.
