In the wake of the June shooting at an Aurora movie theater that left twelve people dead, the New York Post ran an editorial acknowledging that “there is no legitimate reason for gun-sellers to be peddling militarized accessories, like high-capacity ammunition magazines, speed loaders and such.” At the same time, though, the conservative editorial page cautioned that “while a case can be made for stronger national gun laws, it needs to be advanced with profound respect for the constitutional issues involved … The Constitution is the law of the land. Respect it.”
But the massacre in Newtown elicited a call from the Post-owning Rupert Murdoch for stronger gun control, and the newspaper, which only a few months ago was deferring to the sanctity of the Second Amendment, seems to have gotten the message. From today’s editorial, “Adam Lanza’s Weapons“:
Has technology rendered the 2nd Amendment to the US Constitution obsolete?
That is, has the application of modern military design to civilian firearms produced a class of weapons too dangerous to be in general circulation?
We say: Yes …
Weapons designed expressly to kill human beings, and then modified (wink wink) to meet the federal machine-gun ban, have no legitimate place in American society.
Time to get rid of them.
