Renato Seabra Found Guilty of Castrating and Murdering Carlos Castro

Yesterday, a Manhattan jury found Portuguese underwear model Renato Seabra guilty of the gruesome murder of his 65-year-old lover, noted Portuguese fashion journalist Carlos Castro, at the Times Square InterContinental Hotel nearly two years ago. Seabra, who’d initially confessed to the crime, later recanted and tried for an insanity plea instead. In the end, the jury didn’t buy it, though Seabra’s actions — which included screaming “I’m not gay anymore” while smashing a laptop over Castro’s head, kicking him to death, castrating him with a corkscrew, and doing some pretty unmentionable things with the genitals afterward — do sound pretty nuts. However, prosecutor Maxine Rosenthal successfully argued that if Seabra had been “truly delusional” during the attack, he wouldn’t have “disabled the hotel room phone, drawn shut the curtains, stolen Castro’s cash, and put a ‘Do Not Disturb’ sign on the door before leaving.” He faces a sentence 15 years to life in prison.
