A Harlem school’s attempt to make teachers and students feel safer in the wake of the Newtown massacre backfired terribly on Tuesday morning. Officials at the Horan School, which serves 300 special needs students, decided to practice the school’s emergency procedure without warning teachers beforehand. After a woman said over the loudspeaker, “Shooter,” or, “intruder,” and, “get out, get out, lockdown,” panicked teachers called 911 as students looked for hiding spots. “We really thought we were not going home that night,” said one teacher. “It was probably the worst feeling I ever had in my life.” The New York City Education Department, says it’s “looking into how this drill was conducted.”
