There was never much hope for the 60-foot finback whale, which washed up on the shore of Breezy Point Wednesday morning. Now an official who has been watching the poor animal reports that he hasn’t seen it take a breath since around 10 a.m. today, which means “we can basically say that it’s dead.” Marine biologists are still waiting on the National Parks Service to bring in the “heavy equipment” they’ll need to do a necropsy, along with “a callback from their logistics coordinator to see if they have landfills they’ve worked with in the past or if there is a burial option.” So there’s a chance this bleak story could get even bleaker.
