Senator John Kerry was easily confirmed as secretary of State this afternoon by his colleagues, who voted in favor of President Obama’s nominee 94 to 3. The dissenting voices all came from Texas and Oklahoma, with Republican Senators John Cornyn and Ted Cruz of the Lone Star State joining Jim Inhofe to deliver protest “no” votes. Kerry himself said “present” and will start on Friday, after giving up his Senate seat in Massachusetts. He’ll replace Hillary Clinton, who also did not vote for herself, although that would have been a pretty awesome way to go out.
