The Stamford Advocate published a big, can’t-miss-it ad for the Eighth annual East Coast Fine Arms Show (plugging the free parking) right next to an article titled “A different Sandy Hook Elementary opens” in its Thursday edition, and had its offensive negligence promptly pointed out. “Our newspapers should not be running gun ads — including ads for antique and collectible gun shows — next to stories about Sandy Hook,” a rep for the paper told Romenesko. “It’s insensitive, and it shouldn’t have happened. It was an oversight, and we apologize for it. We have taken steps to make sure it doesn’t happen again.” The thing is, any time an advertisement for guns is near news, it’s probably too close to tragedy.
