As of March 12, a New York City pizzeria can’t sell sugary drinks larger than 16 ounces, but you’ll still be able to buy a two liter bottle of soda from the grocery store next door. When asked to explain the inconsistency on Monday, Mayor Bloomberg snapped, “Why don’t you ask the question to the state, which regulates [grocery] stores?” He added, “The state should do exactly the same thing in stores.” Later his office clarified that he’s only talking about eliminating absurdly large sodas in restaurants and is “not taking a position on what state government should do with grocery stores.”
Since Governor Cuomo’s office declined to comment, we’ll assume he’s not interested. Though, being the guy who prevented families across the state from sharing soda bottles and cartons of orange juice would definitely set him apart from other 2016 presidential hopefuls.
