After a lab tech’s errors called DNA evidence in some 800 rape cases into question, the New York City medical examiner’s office started looking at the rest of its practices, and it found more errors. This time, DNA evidence in 55 criminal cases wasn’t uploaded to a state database, and when investigators did upload them, at least one got a hit. The deputy director of quality assurance in the lab has been fired, and the director of forensic biology, Dr. Mechthild Prinz, suspended, but hopefully all this self-examination gets the office back on track.
