A day after Wayne LaPierre shared his made-up memory of Hurricane Sandy, the NRA executive vice-president described the State of the Union in a way that makes it sound like he picked a bad time for a bathroom break. According to LaPierre, the speech exposed the “charade” that the aim of new federal gun laws is “about keeping kids safe at school.” “That wasn’t even mentioned in the president’s speech,” he said, adding, “In an hourlong speech, no where were the words ‘school safety’ to be found.” Obama discussed Newtown, a girl who was fatally shot after school, and declared, “What I’ve said tonight matters little if we don’t come together to protect our most precious resource, our children.” It’s true that the term “school safety” didn’t make an appearance, but we assume that Obama’s desire to make kids safer is still in effect on school grounds.
