On Thursday, Julio Acevedo, the driver in the crash that killed a Hasidic couple expecting their first child, pleaded not guilty to three counts of manslaughter, which were added this week to a previous charge of leaving the scene of an accident. Acevedo didn’t speak in court, but the Daily News reports that his lawyer, Kathleen Julian, said they’re “disappointed with the upgraded charges.” She went on to reference the case of David Ranta, a man who was wrongly convicted of killing Rabbi Chaskel Werzberger and was finally released on Thursday after 23 years behind bars. “It’s the same community,” Julian said. “There was public pressure and now that case is falling apart.”
