Two days after David Ranta was released from prison after serving 23 years for the 1991 murder of Hasidic rabbi Chaskel Werzberger — a crime he didn’t commit — the newly free man suffered “a serious heart attack” in a New York hotel he was staying in with his family. “The toll that his years in prison have taken on David is great,” said his lawyer, who reported that doctors had used a stent to open his client’s blocked arteries.
