Dzhokhar Tsarnaev has been relocated from Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston to Federal Medical Center Devens, a minimum-security facility on the grounds of the old Fort Devens that houses federal prisoners who require specialized medical treatment. The fenceless prison 40 miles west of Boston has been described as “agreeable” and “fairly pleasant,” with an outdoor basketball court and an arts and crafts building.
“There is a common area in each building where the residents can watch television, play cards or read — all night, if they want to,” the Hartford Courant reported in 2005. “They eat in a cafeteria, but one day a week, they can cook their own food that they buy at the prison canteen with their own funds or prison camp job wages.”
It’s not clear how long Tsarnaev will stay at FMC Devens, or whether, once he’s physically able, he’ll be allowed to enjoy the same freedoms and privileges, as, say, his prisonmate Raj Rajaratnam.
