Former Newark Mayor Sharpe James Now a Random Crime Victim

Sharpe James has had a tough time following his 20-year stint as mayor of Newark, ever since he lost an election to Cory Booker in 2006 and then got convicted of fraud in 2008. Then, on Thursday, a further indignity: Someone ran up behind James, put him in a headlock, and stole a gold chain from around his neck. Didn’t the robber realize who he was, asked a shocked ABC New York reporter. No. And neither did the witness he was speaking to. “Not until a while ago when someone called me on the phone and came back up here and somebody said it was the mayor.” That’s got to give Booker an ever-so-slight chill for the future.
