The New York Times introduces the city’s new electric taxicabs as the cars that could replace the “taxi of tomorrow.” But drivers aren’t very impressed at how long it currently takes them to charge up: Taxi Commissioner David S. Yassky “estimated that 30 minutes of charging allowed a cabby roughly 80 miles of driving in the city. Some drivers said they traveled 100 miles on a typical day.” On the other hand, the drivers have special permission to turn down fares to the outer boroughs, which could sweeten the deal.
