Gay-Bashings Continue Across Manhattan

Contarino.

Mere hours after a thousand-strong marched through the West Village to protest the shooting death of 32-year-old Mark Carson during a homophobic encounter, two more suspected gay-bashings occurred in Manhattan. In one instance, a Hispanic couple was attacked in Soho while being called anti-gay epithets; two men were arrested and charged with a hate crime, NBC New York reports. Unfortunately, that was not it for the night.

In Alphabet City, party promoter Dan Contarino was beaten in what is being investigated as another bias attack. “UGH,” he wrote on Facebook. “THIS IS JUST AS BRUTAL AS the ATTACK…. 3 hours… 8 detective interviews… now waiting for Hate Crimes Unit main interview… THEN BACK TO THE HOSPITAL.” Later, he added, ” THANKS FOR CALLS…. GAY BASHED LAST NITE…. back from small surgery…. CHEST XRAYS THIS AM…. suspect still at large… police n media waiting to interview me… U JUST WANNA CRY N MOVE ON….”

The recent spate of attacks, just prior to Gay Pride Month, brings the annual total of hate crimes so far to at least 24, up from 14 at this point last year, making for one of the worst upward trends imaginable.
