The depressing statistical story of the evening comes from the Centers for Disease Control, which published a study into U.S. suicide rates from 1999 to 2010, finding they had spiked to the point where more Americans died of suicide in 2010 (38,364), than in car crashes (33,687). Middle-aged men were most likely to commit suicide and they were most likely to use a gun, the study found, but poisonings and hangings had also increased.
