At least six New Yorkers were killed and another nineteen wounded by gunfire in less than 48 hours this weekend, the New York Daily News reports, marring the summerlike sunshine. It sucks to remember annually that with insane heat often comes insane crime, but the entire city sans Staten Island felt it on Saturday and Sunday: Twelve people were shot in Brooklyn, eight in the Bronx, four in Queens, and one in Manhattan. In Bed-Stuy, an 11-year-old girl was hit amid gang violence and might never walk again. In the Bronx, a 15-year-old girl took a bullet to the leg while pushing a baby stroller. “We should have more gun control,” her mother said. “I wish they could just make guns extinct, period.”

“Context on shootings this wknd: fewest for that week in a decade,” tweeted Mayor Bloomberg’s press secretary Marc La Vorgna this morning. “For year, shootings down 27% from record low. What we’re doing is working.”
