Ed Koch served in World War II, but his tombstone says he wasn’t born until 1942, when the conflict was underway. He was actually born in 1924. It’s especially ironic because Koch planned his memorial so carefully, buying his Trinity Church plot in 2008, and pre-ordering his tombstone. But the inscription of Koch’s birth and death dates came just this month, a typo by a stone cutter. They’ve promised to “correct the record,” as every news outlet carrying the story reminds us Koch loved to say.
