Commuters wait on a platform as a train arrives at a subway station in New York, November 21, 2008. The New York Metropolitan Transportation Authorithy (MTA) said that to plug a 1.2 billion USD budget gap next year, it must increase fare and toll revenues by 23 percent, which would raise an additional 670 USD million if the increase goes into effect in early June.

Sadly, people die on the subway tracks a lot in this city, so a death Tuesday in Astoria, Queens wasn’t big news. But as Gothamist reported, it carried the grisly distinction of happening on an elevated track, causing body parts to fall onto the street below. There are links there to some incredibly disturbing photos, if you want. A better option: Reading this brief essay by Business Insider’s Chris C. Anderson, who lives nearby, on how a ghastly incident like that can be a good reminder to appreciate when we don’t have things that bad.
