Snowden May Still Wind Up on a Flight to Cuba

In a speech on Sunday, Cuban president Raul Castro said his nation identifies with Edward Snowden’s quest to expose American surveillance, as it’s “one of the most harassed and spied-upon nations on the planet.” He added, “We support the sovereign right of …. Venezuela and all states in the region to grant asylum to those persecuted for their ideals or their struggles for democratic rights.” Since there are no direct flights from Moscow to Venezuela, Bolivia, or Nicaragua, hopping a flight to Cuba is probably Snowden’s easiest escape route. While Castro’s moral support seems like a good sign, he stopped short of offering Snowden safe passage, or saying anything else that could seriously rile Cuba’s old nemesis.
