Well, technically it will be the dredging company Weeks Marine, of Cranford, N.J., who will transport 600,000 cubic yards of sand to Rockaway Beach from East Rockaway Inlet starting this week, in a $10 million contract with the Army Corps of Engineers. The sand, which will go between Beach 89th and 149th streets, will replace about half that lost from Rockaway Beach to Hurricane Sandy, WNYC reported earlier. But it will still make the beach much wider and therefore less crowded.
