When 12-year-old Joel Morales hanged himself last year after relentless bullying inside and out of school, his situation did not take his family by surprise. Joel transferred schools, his mother Lizbeth Babilonia contacted the police, and she tried to get her and her son transferred to another housing project. But still, Joel took his own life on May 29, 2012. Now, Babilonia is suing the city, the Board of Education, and the individual bullies who tormented Joel, as well as their parents. The suit claims Babilonia “complained multiple times per week to Department of Education personnel,” but the bullies were not disciplined.
