Horace Mann Would Like Some of Its ‘Hush Money’ Back

Horace Mann payed about $1 million to settle with two sexual abuse victims who attended the school, and now it’s suing its insurers for that money, the New York Post reports. The trouble is, by filing the lawsuit the school made the formerly quiet settlement a matter of public record, and now the Post is free to write stories about the school doling out “hush money” to those abused while in its care. As the paper points out, though, if all 27 victims the school reportedly settled with received $500,000 payouts, that amounts to $13.5 million. And the PR hit begins to look a little more worth it in clawing that money back.
