Anthony Weiner’s plan to increase safety by putting cameras on cops is all well and good, but he wasn’t the only mayoral candidate promoting some big ideas today. While visiting a distributor of building maintenance supplies in Queens, Joe Lhota excitedly urged a reporter to “take a whiff” of a mint-scented trash bag designed to repel mice, raccoons, and other pests, according to the New York Times. The company’s chief executive complained that the city’s Parks Department won’t consider buying the bags. “Rats are a bigger problem in parks than they are in the subway,” Lhota noted. “Most people don’t realize that.” After serving as Mayor Giuliani’s official “rat czar,” Lhota has plenty more fascinating rat facts, and ideas for winning the city’s long war between man and rodent.
“It’s clear,” O’Neill said that Pantaleo “can no longer” carry out the job as a New York City police officer.
