Counterterrorism officials have been debating when to reveal that the U.S. filed the first criminal charges in the attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya, and Tuesday’s announcement isn’t likely to calm Republican lawmakers who claim the investigation is taking too long. The Wall Street Journal reports that Ahmed Abu Khattalah, founder of Libya’s Islamist militia Ansar al-Sharia, has been charged along with several others for the attack that killed Ambassador Christopher Stevens and three other Americans. The documents are sealed, so it’s unclear what exactly Abu Khattalah is charged with, or even how many other people are named in the investigation. The Justice Department is still pursuing the case, and sources say more suspects will be charged with whatever crimes occurred on September 11, 2012.
