Airbnb Users: State Prosecutors Want to Know Who You Are

New York’s attorney general, Eric Schneiderman, wants Airbnb to hand over data for 15,000 people who have used the site to list their apartments. The state has been trying to recover what it says are lost property taxes of about fifteen percent per rental. Airbnb calls the subpoena “overbroad,” but for a state that continues to struggle to make its budget, a Schneiderman spokesman’s comment is telling: “New York can’t afford to leave this much money on the table.” Expect this fight to get serious.
