Both Candidates Want to Reschedule Debate for Sometime Other Than Sandy’s Anniversary [Update]

The final mayoral debate is scheduled to take place on the same day, and at the same time, as the peak of Hurricane Sandy’s deadly and destructive storm surge last year. This is something Joe Lhota and Bill de Blasio have known since the Campaign Finance Board scheduled the debates in June. But it wasn’t until Sunday that the candidates said anything publicly about changing the unfortunate debate date. The candidates on Sunday issued a joint statement asking the board to reschedule, writing that “this day should be marked with solemn reflection and remembrance.” Lhota told NY1 he had “expressed my concern to the Campaign Finance Board months ago,” but the debate organizers “countered that no one complained until this weekend.” All the same, with both participants now lobbying for a new date, it would probably be good for those planning on viewing parties to start thinking of some alternate Tuesday night activities. Update: The debate has been postponed to Wednesday at 7 p.m.
