CNBC Reporter Regrets Suggesting ‘Mexican Music’ for Segment About Ted Cruz

What kind of music comes to mind when you think of Ted Cruz? On CNBC’s Squawk Box yesterday, reporter Steve Liesman went with … “Mexican music.” But not because Ted Cruz is Mexican (he’s not) or even Hispanic (half-Cuban, to be precise).

I thought of him only as an American senator from Texas, and in an attempt, on the fly, to choose music representing that state, I chose Mexican music,” Liesman writes in an apology posted online today.

As a musician for many decades, I’ve played and listened to tons of Texas songs infused with Mexican themes. A better choice would have been Country/Western or Texas Roadhouse Blues,” Liesman adds.

Personally, we would go with ominous organ music or the screeching violins from the Psycho shower scene.
