Among the “essential” government services open during the shutdown is the House’s members-only gym, ThinkProgress reports, with the decision coming “directly from Speaker Boehner’s office.” The Senate’s gym is open as well — ostensibly so lawmakers can take showers — although there’s no staff in place, so use of the heated swimming pool, basketball courts, workout machines, sauna, steam room, and flat-screen TVs is going completely unregulated.
