Election Day Cuteness: Chiara de Blasio Surprises Dad

Democratic New York City mayoral candidate Bill de Blasio is surprised by his daughter Chiara at his home in Park Slope section of Brooklyn in New York, November 5, 2013. Chiara surprised her father by returning home from college to vote. New Yorkers go to the polls on Tuesday to choose a new mayor, with the likely winner being Public Advocate Bill de Blasio, who has a dominant lead in polls and would be the first Democrat elected to the office in two decades. Despite a brutal Democratic primary, de Blasio has held a solid lead over Republican Joe Lhota in polls. REUTERS/Brendan McDermid (UNITED STATES - Tags: POLITICS ELECTIONS) - RTX1511M

It’s family ties until the end: With just hours to go until the campaign is officially over, the De Blasio family managed to squeeze in at least one more adorable moment. “I was a little sad because I was under the impression that Chiara had to stay at school because of some tests, but it turned out that was all a clever ruse perpetrated by my family,” said the big guy today at his Park Slope polling place. “I opened the door this morning, and Chiara jumped out from behind the trash cans in the front yard and surprised me.”

This is the greatest gift I could have on Election Day is to have my daughter with us,” said De Blasio. And no matter the results, which look pretty good, “I’m already floating on air because my daughter’s here with us. And this guy’s okay too,” he added, nudging Dante.

Joe Lhota has a daughter, too.
