India has been rocked by a series of high-profile, brutal rapes over the past few years, resulting in a nationwide movement to fix what many see as a national crisis. So one would assume that Ranjit Sinha, the head of the CBI — India’s equivalent of the FBI — would take rape pretty seriously. One would be wrong, because here’s something he said yesterday while arguing for the legalization of gambling:
>Sinha said at the conference that if the state could not stop gambling, it could at least make some revenue by legalizing it.
“If you cannot enforce the ban on betting, it is like saying, ‘If you can’t prevent rape, you enjoy it,’” he said.
People didn’t appreciate this remark, for some reason, and Sinha was forced to clarify that he said, uh, exactly what everyone heard him say:
Sinha later told Hindustan Times he “was just making a point, that it is very difficult to enforce a ban on betting, that you can make a law but there are already so many and it is difficult to enforce. Lotteries are already legal. So I said betting could be legalized, it can be taxed. To make this point, I just used a proverb”.
