With the city currently facing questions about how 14-year-old Avonte Oquendo could possibly vanish from school without a trace, this does not look good: Late last week, a 4-year-old in Bed-Stuy went to use the bathroom and ended up at home before anyone noticed. “He looked really nervous, and I asked him if he was OK, and he said he was scared, and I asked him what happened, and he told me he was in the bathroom, it was dark and no one was there,” said the child’s mother. Worst still, he did not have on a coat.
Luckily, the kid only had to go a block to make it home to the Tompkins Houses. “His finger could have got smashed in the door,” said his understandably upset mother. “He could have tried to cross the street.”
In response, the principal at P.S. 59 promised more alarms, video surveillance, and an “emergency meeting” to go over safety protocol. “Somebody’s got to be fired behind this and be held accountable so it doesn’t happen again,” a local community leader demanded to NY1. Regardless, the child’s parents said they’re pulling him from the school.
