Man Hangs Himself in Manhattan Holding Cell

A 51-year-old man arrested Saturday night on the Upper East Side for attempted burglary was found hanging in his cell the next morning in an apparent suicide. At around 10 a.m. on Sunday, Edward Soto of the Bronx was rushed from the 19th Precinct station house to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The Daily News notes that police are supposed to take prisoners’ belts and shoelaces, but it appears Soto used a cord from his coat. Relatives told the New York Times that Soto had been behaving erratically and talking about hurting himself since his wife of seventeen years died in March. The NYPD’s Internal Affairs Bureau is investigating his death.
