If ever a railroad had a year worth quitting over, 2013 on Metro-North was it. And that’s exactly what Howard R. Permut, the railroad’s president, is planning to do, according to the New York Times. In addition to the fatal derailment and crash in the Bronx on Dec. 1, last year saw scores injured as two trains collided in Fairfield, many more inconvenienced as a power outage crippled the New Haven line, workers claiming overtime for whole days of idleness, a freight train derailment at Spuyten Duyvil, and various other mishaps. Permut is expected to stay on the job through the end of this month to help with the transition as Joseph Giulietti, executive director of the South Florida Regional Transportation Authority, takes over his position.
