Adding an element of fear to a Super Bowl already beset with less-than-stellar ticket sales, a number of hotels around Met Life Stadium on Friday reported a suspicious white powder found in their mail rooms. Across the Hudson, another envelope containing white powder turned up in Rudy Giuliani’s mail. Fortunately, that material appears to be nontoxic, and nobody has been reported injured so far. “Among the seven locations are two hotels in Lyndhurst, two in Carlstadt, and one in East Rutherford,” reports NJ.com. The New Jersey State Police said in a statement that the Joint Terrorism Task Force and Hazard Materials units had responded to “several locations that have received a suspicious letter and substance.”
Update: At least one of the envelopes sent to a hotel turns out to be benign, per CNN: “The contents of one letter sent to the Homewood Suites in East Rutherford, New Jersey, was tested and determined to be cornstarch, according to East Rutherford Mayor James Cassella.”
