Mayor Bill de Blasio finally took a few questions Monday about the video of his official SUV speeding and running stop signs last week. His comments, unsurprisingly, indicated that he did not think the speeding was hypocritical in light of his recent traffic-safety campaign. His NYPD security detail might have reason to break a few traffic laws in the course of protecting him, he said, which was a “very different question” that deserved more respect than it was getting. The interesting thing here, though, is not what he said, but the fact that he said anything at all after stalking out of a presser on Friday without answering a single question on the topic. If every minor issue becomes this kind of a battle of wills between de Blasio and the press corps, this is going to be a long four years for all of them.
