A second juror in the Michael Dunn case went public on Tuesday, telling CNN that she thinks Michael Dunn is a “good guy” who “made bad decisions.” Creshuna Miles, 21, said she believes Dunn committed second-degree murder when he shot 17-year-old Jordan Davis. Last week, Dunn was convicted on three counts of attempted second-degree murder, but the first-degree murder charge resulted in a hung jury. Miles, who was one of two African Americans on the jury, agreed with the first juror to come forward that race wasn’t a factor in the jury’s decision. “I never once thought about, oh, this was a black kid. This was a white guy,” said Miles. “We didn’t even think about the race aspect of it. Race was never a factor … when I was making my decision.”
Miles said she wanted Davis’s family to know that she tried to fight for him in the jury room. “We, everyone that felt he was guilty, we fought and we fought and we fought, and I saw the look on his dad’s face when we came to nothing,” she said. “I know it hurts. It’s like thinking you’ve got this wound healed and then somebody slices it open again because now they have to go through that whole process all over again.”
The teen’s parents, Ron Davis and Lucia McBath, responded in a separate interview with Anderson Cooper on Thursday evening. “For her as an African-American female to go into this case, with this type of evidence, with this type of rage, with [Dunn] saying, ‘Thug music’? How can you as a juror not think that this was about race?” said Ron Davis. “I think she didn’t want it to be about race,” McBath added. “I think she really hoped that that was not an element of it. But it’s always been an element of what happened in our case.”
