Mayor Bill de Blasio sure captured the public sentiment on Tuesday, when he expressed his supreme annoyance at all this damn snow and slush. Obnoxious is right! With the latest dose of wintry mix fouling up the region’s commute for god knows how many times now this winter, the city is starting to show the strain. Oceans of slush lapped over the tops of street-crossers’ shoes, strollers and bicycles were useless, and the subways began to flicker out. And there’s a 50 percent chance we’ll get to do it again next Monday. The temptation to say “screw it” and just hibernate until April is getting difficult to resist.
A power failure along the 1,2, and 3 lines put them out of service between 72nd and 125th streets, and 7 train service has been suspended, with one station evacuated due to fire. Metro North and LIRR both experienced delays, while Governor Andrew Cuomo announced Interstate 84 had been closed, and Long Island and New York City were running very low on salt. A jaunt through Twitter and Instagram reveals some of the carnage that was this morning in New York. However terrible your trip to work was, take solace in the fact that you were not alone. Not by a long shot.
