27 Killed in Chinese Knife Attack

China’s disturbing knife-attack trend is back. The AP reports that a “group of knife-wielding men attacked a train station in southwestern China on Saturday, leaving at least 27 people dead and another 109 injured.” The state-run Xinhua News Agency called the incident at the Kunming Railway Station one of the deadliest attacks in the country’s recent history. There’s no word yet on what motivated the gang, but local authorities describe this as an “organized, premeditated violent terrorist attack.”

Yang Haifei, a local resident of Yunnan who was stabbed in the chest and back, told Xinhua, “I saw a person come straight at me with a long knife and I ran away with everyone.” He said people who weren’t as fast got caught by the knife squad. “They just fell on the ground.” Xinhua reporters at the Kunming No.1 People’s Hospital say that over 60 victims had arrived as of midnight Sunday, local time.

The Ministry of Public Security used its official Sina Weibo account (a Twitter equivalent) to announce: “No matter what motives the murderers hold, the killing of innocent people is against kindness and justice. The police will crack down on the crimes in accordance with the law without any tolerance. May the dead rest in peace.”
