Chris Christie Somehow Survives Town Hall Grilling From Guy Who Says He Looks Great, Seems Fun

While continuing to avoid reporters, New Jersey Governor Chris Christie attended another of his signature town halls today, fielding a question from a man who began with the hard-hitting, “You look better in person than you do on TV.” (The governor responded, “You wanna come home for dinner tonight?”) The gentleman then came at Christie with a devastating follow-up, offering to pick up his dry-cleaning, have a few beers with him, and play pool every Saturday. “You want to get married?” Christie replied. But seriously, folks …

Following the brief bromance, the man asked a real question, wondering why Christie focused, in his marathon Bridgegate press conference, on the fact that Bridget “Time for some traffic problems in Fort Lee” Kelly was fired for lying to her boss, not shutting down the lanes as political revenge.

Although Christie again denied any involvement in the shutdown, he reiterated that “the offense, first and foremost, is not being honest with the person you’re working for. The secondary offense was — if she had been honest and told me? Yeah, she would have been fired anyway.”

“I don’t approve of what happened, I didn’t approve of what happened, and I’m doing everything I can right now to make sure that something like that never happens again,” he added. The questioner, believe it or not, seemed to come away convinced.
