Last September, three guys walked to the top of the World Trade Center tower, skydived off it in the dead of night (the footage is here), and managed not to be identified by the police until this week. Meanwhile, just over a week ago, 16-year-old Justin Casquejo climbed through a hole in the fence surrounding the building, tiptoed past a sleeping guard, convinced an elevator operator to give him a ride to the 88th floor, and made his way to the roof, tweeting all the way. It seems safe to assume that others have pulled similar feats without getting caught, which is pretty embarrassing (and frightening) for the people in charge of security at the site. So, it was good to see them getting their act together on Tuesday by busting two CNN employees trying to sneak in.
“They were trying to prove a point. I guess they thought anybody could get in,” a “law enforcement source” told the New York Post. Unfortunately for 26-year-old producer Connor Boals and his 35-year-old colleague, Yon Pomrenze, some people cannot, in fact, just stroll into what the paper refers to as “the world’s top terror target” — especially amid all this bad publicity. The two have been charged with trespassing, obstructing governmental administration, and disorderly conduct. (CNN says that the pair wasn’t asked to do any of those things.) “We were just made aware of this and are actively looking into it,” a CNN spokesperson told the Post. Better luck next time.
